I had discovered Etsy awhile back and was instantly enthralled by the magnificent array of handmade items. If you don’t know what Etsy is, I can only describe it as an Ebay for arts and crafts, but without the bidding.
After a few months of perusing the site on and off, a light bulb went off in my head, “Hey! I could make an Etsy shop”. So that’s exactly what I did.
One thing that was really satisfying about starting my Etsy shop was that it gave me a push to start painting again, a love that I left behind years ago. I was also surprised to find out that picking up my paintbrushes again helped my writing. While painting, thoughts of my writing would float by. Characters would have conversations, new ideas would pop up and old ideas got fleshed out. The whole process was all very meditative. When I started writing again, I didn’t have any writer’s block and a lot of the rough spots in my WIPs disappeared. I was able to look at my work with new ideas and a fresh perspective. It was very refreshing! I knew before that it was a good idea to take a step back from WIPs, but I didn’t know how critical that step actually was until now.
I honestly think that this writing breakthrough was due to the creative energy that flowed through me while painting. Painting on canvas not your thing? No problem. Here’s a list of other ideas that also have a creative, meditative quality.
– Playing with Legos or other building blocks
– Putting together a puzzle
– Painting models
– Playing in the sand
– Jewellery making
These are all from my experience, but I’m sure there are a thousand more! What do you like to do that really helps your mind process your writing?
